Linux issue: appimages dont run without requirement fuse2/libfuse2 in some linux (my case)

fuse2 is deprecated in favor of fuse3 in some linux. Siyuan appimages require libfuse2/libfuse2r64 to run, on some linux it will not run without it. Installing the dependency manually fixes the issue. Sources: appimage.org - fuse

NOTE: libfuse2 package was renamed to libfuse2t64 in newer version.

Method 2 worked for me (because my apt repo didnt have the library by default), method 2 (extracting) works, but cumbersome. ⚠️ Warning: test in a Virtual Machine first, wrong action could break OS, but fixable). Disclaimer: not liable for OS breakage for installing e.g. wrong package or wrong architecture (check architecture: uname -r or uname -a).

Method 1: just install from package manager (if available for your os)

Just install it from your linux package manager (if the libraries libfuse2 or libfuse2t64 are available for your os), as recommended by appimage.org - fuse. Instructions at source link

Method 2: manually install libfuse2t64

Install libfuse2 manually from the Debian package pool. Download and install package from Debian release that still provides it, then run .AppImage as usual. Perform all of following (for Debian in this case):

  1. Download package that matches architecture of guest (uname -a). Browse Debian pool directory at deb.debian.org/debian/pool/main/f/fuse/.
# For arm64
wget http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/f/fuse/libfuse2t64_2.9.9-9_arm64.deb
  1. Install downloaded package and resolve any outstanding dependencies. Adjust file name to match package you downloaded.
sudo dpkg -i libfuse2t64_2.9.9-9_arm64.deb
sudo apt --fix-broken install
  1. Verify that library is installed:
dpkg -l libfuse2

Method 3: run appimage using

The appimage--extract command allows you to extract files from an AppImage.

  1. First, determine if AppImage file uses newer type 2 format
/path/to/your.AppImage --appimage-help
  1. Extract appimage content by running:
./path/to/appimage.AppImage --appimage-extract
  1. The extracted contents will be stored in directory called squashfs-root in current working directory.
cd squashfs-root/
./siyuan

Thanks for the additional details. We’ve updated the Linux AppImage packaging to use a statically linked runtime, removing the dependency on the system’s libfuse2 library. Normal FUSE support is still required.

The change is on dev: #20667. Isolated runtime tests passed; testing with the full application on affected systems is still needed.

Please try the next build containing this change and let us know whether it resolves the startup issue.

Thanks for sharing. Could you provide:

      • Your Linux distribution, version, and CPU architecture
      • The exact SiYuan AppImage filename
      • The full error output when launching it from a terminal

Also, did installing libfuse2t64 allow the AppImage to launch normally, or do you still need to extract it first? This will help us confirm the cause.
