So this means syncing might/will be behind paywall in the future - but it's all OSS so how can that be forced?

That I don't know. We'll have to wait and see how they implement that paywall in the future.

Hey - will syncing with S3 stay free in the OSS version without premium subscription or are you planning to put syncing in generall behind paywall in the future? (I'm coming from Obsidian as syncing without their sync service is painfull)
